Review of the book Digital Stock Photography – How to Shoot and Sell. This is a great addition to any stock photographer's library and contains great information, including 25 stock assignments that you can shoot to jumpstart your stock portfolio.

Review of Digital Stock Photography – How to Shoot and Sell
Michal Heron

The book Digital Stock Photography – How to Shoot and Sell is an excellent addition to a Stock Photographer’s library. I went to my local library and found that it wasn’t carried in the libraries collection, so I did an Inter-library loan (ILL) and within a couple of weeks, the book was sent to me from a library in Colorado.

The book is a comprehensive introduction to the world of Digital Stock Photography.

Contents:
1.	The Business of Digital Stock
2.	How to Shoot for Stock – Style and Concept
3.	Equipment for Capturing and Scanning Images
4.	Shooting What’s Needed
5.	Twenty-five Stock Assignments you can Shoot
6.	Preparing the Shoot
7.	Editing and Post Production in the Digital Work Flow
8.	Running a Stock Photography Business
9.	Marketing your Stock
10.	Finding a Stock Agency or Portal
11.	Negotiating Prices
12.	Copyright – What Do We Own
13.	Model Releases and Business Forms
14.	Appendix 1: Bibliography
15.	Appendix 2: Organizations
16.	Appendix 3: Workshops
17.	Appendix 4: Promotions/Source Books
18.	Appendix 5: Manufactures

The chapter on Style and Concept provided good thought provoking shoot concepts. How do you capture togetherness as a family in an image. How do you shoot stress? How do you shoot teamwork?

There was also a good section on shooting symbols and what things mean (i.e. the topic of cooperation could be represented by images of teams, a barn raising, shaking hands, etc.)

My favorite portion of the book was the 25 Stock Assignments I can shoot. Each assignment contains the category, purpose, and subject of the image. It contains variation and how to frame the shots, what models are needed, props, ethnicities, and location. Each shot includes what things to avoid and several general notes about each shoot.

As I looked through the assignments, there are good assignments that if shot completely would result in a solid selection of stock images that can make some money. Some of the general subjects include Elderly with technology, Families, and Health Care. All of these are great topics for stock downloads.

In the preparing the shoot section it talks about arranging for models, asking permission from businesses to shoot at a location, offering incentives to get permission for the shoot, creating a storyboard, working with a Production Coordinator, building a prop closet so you have the props you need for multiple shoots, even sending a thank you note to the models after the shoot.

The section on Releases and forms contains sample Model releases, Property Releases, Stock Picture Delivery Memo, Stock Shoot Estimate Worksheet, Stock Photography invoice, and a Stock Photo Request Form.

All in all this is a great book and highly recommended for those looking to get into the business of Stock Photography.

Occasionally, I take the time to search the internet to identify where my stock images are being used.

I found that Geology.com was using my Hunter’s Panel – Indian Petroglyph Stock Photography Image on their page talking about Petroglyph Photos

This image was used on a page showing various samples of indian petroglyphs from around the world. My Hunters Panel image is about 3/4 of the way down the page…closer to the bottom.

The Hunter’s Panel petroglyph is located in Nine Mile Canyon about 2.5 hours outside of Salt Lake City, Utah. Nine mile canyon literally has thousands of indian petroglyphs that were created by the Freemont indians. The Hunter’s Panel is a famous Petroglyph towards the end of the canyon. It is an amazing visit to drive the canyon. If you look on the canyon walls, there are literally thousands of petroglyphs that depict life for the freemont indians. Someone has taken the time to mark on the road many places where there are petroglyphs located on the canyon walls. The best way to enjoy this canyon would be to take several days in the spring or fall and walk the length of the canyon with your camera, gps, and notebook enjoying the indian art and reliving the history represented on the canyon walls.

Feel free to visit http://www.istockphoto.com/legacyimagesphotography to see my other stock images available.

Description of the experience I had producing my first money making photograph of the Cologne Cathedral in Cologne, Germany

It was a cold, winter day in February. I was visiting Düsseldorf, Germany for a business meeting and had to stay the weekend. I asked the hotel concierge where the best place to visit was for the short time that I had available. The concierge suggested that I take the short drive (about 30 minutes on the autobahn) down to Köln (Cologne for those who don’t speak much German) to visit the Cathedral there.

I drove around the city and finally found a parking space close to the city center where the cathedral dominates the landscape. I walked around the building just amazed at the sheer size of the building. The architecture is awe inspiring, especially considering the fact that construction started in the year 1248.

Inside, the sun was streaming through the hundreds of stained glass windows, featuring different scenes from the Savior’s life, the Virgin Mary, or images of the various Catholic Saints. The floor was inlaid with coats of arms and other images.

Inside the altar of the cathedral is very simple, but ornate with the backdrop of impressive stained glass windows within the nave of the cathedral.

I can’t get enough of this cathedral. Every time I come to Cologne, I have to spend time at this awe inspiring building. Sunday, I had a chance to listen to the organ playing and echoing through the building. The acoustics are fantastic!

The first time I visited, I shot several images both inside and outside of the building. I went across the bridge over the Rhein River and froze for 3 hours while I shot this scene. I uploaded it to an online portfolio and it was featured as a showcase image. About 6 months later, I got contacted from a poster dealer in Germany that wanted to publish this image as a poster and pay me royalties. Up until this time, I had only made money portrait sessions or family pictures.

This one image changed my whole outlook for the business of photography.

Stock photographs of money. One dollar bills, hundreds, fifties, twenties. Great images for websites, brochures, and other creative pieces.

I took the time to shoot some money images last week and just submitted them to iStockphoto.com and they were approved this week. I was using a borrowed Nikkor 105mm Macro Lens that was a great lens…fun to work with.

Check them out and let me know what you think.

I like the first one the best. The others are a little abstract, but they will work for the creative minds looking for something a little different.

Interestingly, the first image that was downloaded from my micro stock portfolio at http://www.istockphoto.com/legacyimagesphotography was the second image.

Falcon Guide's published a copy of my Salt Lake City Skyline stock images from iStockphoto.com as the featured image on the back cover. It is great to be a part of a cool book!

One of my iStockphoto Salt Lake City Skyline Stock photography images was featured on the back cover of Falcon’s Guide’s “Best Easy Day Hikes – Salt Lake City” written by Greg Witt and Brian Brinkerhoff.

Greg Witt, the author phoned me and let me know that Falcon Guide had made an error and mistakenly attributed the photo to him. He apologized and let me know that he has requested that they address the attribution mistake in the next printing of the book. He gave me a copy of the book as a gift. The book is great and I am happy to be on the back cover.

Solving the mystery of why my Yoga Lotus Position stock image is published in a book from the Library of Sexual Health. It took some detective work, but I finally found the answer...

I found an image of mine that was published in a book from Rosen Publishing.

It is published in a book called: Amenorrhea: Why Your Period Stops. It is from the Library of Sexual Health.

When I found my name in the photo credits, I had to figure out what image they used. I don’t have any images in my stock portfolio that I envisioned would be appropriate for a book about why your period stops.

I called the publisher and explained who I was and what I was trying to do. They said that they would have someone pull the book and send me a photo copy of the page that had my picture in it. After a couple of days with no email, I decided on a different method. I checked my local bookstores and was told that I could special order the title. Not wanting to add this particular title to my collection, I tried my local library with no results.

I looked for the author (Tamra B. Orr) online to see if she had a website that featured her books. She is a well published author – without a homepage. Another strike.

Finally, I searched and found a library in CA that had the book on the shelf. I called the library and asked for a favor. The library pulled the book from the shelf and described the image to me. It is in the chapter on “Taking Care of Yourself”. Now I can see a connection of why my yoga image would show up in a book on Amenorrhea.

Mystery solved, and I am proud to be published in a book on Sexual Health <grin>.

Trying to sell a used camera via Craiglist and am getting multiple responses that I believe are from Scammers trying to scam me using Paypal. See the dialogue and make the decision for yourself if it is a scam or not.

I am trying to sell a couple of used cameras using Craigslist. I posted accurate descriptions for the cameras, lens, and Grip that I was offering…hoping to get enough to upgrade to a new camera…

I have gotten several responses asking if the cameras are still available. I replied to each saying they were, and asked for a telephone number to call to discuss the transaction. None of the replies have given me their phone number. None of them asked at all about the camera equipment. That threw up a huge red flag for me. Why would someone be willing to pay full price without even asking a single question about the equipment.

I think all are scams and am not going to participate in any transaction — preferring to sell locally to avoid these scams, but I wanted to pass along the info for information and input.

First Craigslist and Paypal Scam Email Thread

Thanks for the message,I am from Canada but i am posting the item to my son living in this address below:

Son’s Name
Address
Nigeria
+234 (Phone number)

The shipping cost via USPS Global Express Mail (EMS), is 150 $, kindly log to your paypal account and send me the paypal money request now. Once i receive the request i will log in to my paypal account to made the payment asap.

MY THOUGHTS:

At least the country code is in Nigeria. But why would he send his sons phone number instead of his own?

Sender is an gmail user – nothing to give an idea of where the user might be emailing from

The english is wrong. Now that might be a reflection of the Canadian School systems, but I don’t think so.

I did a little research and apparently the scam is to send a phishing email back that spoofs paypal saying that you have received payment so you go ahead and send the item.

I did forward the item to spoof@paypal.com for review

Second Craigslist and Paypal Scam Email Thread

Am serious about buying the item from you i will want you to remove the advert from net I will like to buy this for my son schooling in abroad i will pay you $1,600 for your item ,please don’t offer it to any buyer again…i will be paying you $150 for shipping through USPS GLOBAL EXPRESS MAIL (EMS) and i will be making the payment through my Paypal account ,get me your name and paypal email address also your telephone number, looking forward to hearing from you soon.

MY THOUGHTS:

Son is at school abroad? Seems a lot like the last email, whose son is in Nigeria

Sender is an gmail user – nothing to give an idea of where the user might be emailing from

The english is wrong. Now that might be a reflection of the US School systems, but I haven’t gotten a response back when I asked for a phone number to discuss

This seems like the Phishing expedition of the previous email…

I did forward the item to spoof@paypal.com for review

Here is the response to the second email when I asked for her telephone number:

Thanks for the mail, i would have love to call you but due to my traveling my phone is not in use for now, and since this transaction is going to involve paypal,so kindly give me your paypal email address so that i can pay you up

Third Craigslist and Paypal Scam Email Thread

2 separate email replies to my Craigslist ads from the same user (hotmail account) within the same minute asking if my cameras were still available.

MY THOUGHTS:

Why not combine the email asking if both cameras are still available instead of replying to two different emails?

Sender is a hotmail user – That rounds out the top 3 free email accounts (Yahoo, Gmail, and Hotmail)

Here is the response that I got to the emails requesting a telephone number. Exactly the same response to both emails – word for word.

I will like to buy it for my brother and will need your assistance in shipping it to him because i am not in the country right now but i hope it’s in a good condition.I will pay you through PayPal and will be adding an extra of $150 which i am sure will cover the shipping expenses. If you have an account with Paypal, just send me a money request of the total amount to my paypal email,{emailaddress}@gmail.com so i can make your payment. If you don’t have one,you can go to www.paypal.com and easily sign up for a personal account since it’s free, need your reply soon.Thanks.

It is interesting that the first email is a hotmail account but the Paypal account is a gmail account – not completely unreasonable, but interesting…

Fourth Craigslist and Paypal Scam Email Thread

Another thread that was sent to me. The interesting thing is that the exact same email was sent by different names and email addresses, but they contained the same content word for word. This scammer even results to trying to play the missionary card for his Pastor’s son. Where is the respect?

hey friend,
please am a lawyer of a state and due to my work i travel from one country to another for a case so am stoke here in china and my phone don’t have access to work here that is why i can not call you and I’m highly interested in the immediate purchase of this item for my Pastor’s son who went to west Africa for his Missionary courses as birthday gift.I will be glad if you can let me know the total cost of shipping added to the price of the item and do get back to me with your final amount including your PayPal email address so to transfer the payment via PayPal asap. Looking forward to hearing from you soon. NOTE IF YOU ARE ONE OF THOSE FAKE ITEM POSTER OR SCAMPER NEVER GET BACK TO ME …………. bye

I forwarded this email to abuse@craigslist.com.

Response from Craigslist

Thanks for passing this along, it’s definitely related to the scams we’ve seen in recent months. We generally encourage folks to ignore these inquiries altogether, focus on local transactions and interactions, and avoid wiring funds or handing out personal financial details.

If you are in contact with one of these “buyers” already, our best advice is to break off all current communication and ignore any follow-up inquiries. If you have received a fake cashier’s check or money order, it’s usually best to destroy it. And we haven’t received any reports of significant trouble from people who unwittingly gave out their name, address and phone number, so there’s probably no cause for concern if that has happened.

We’re working on ways to prevent these guys from getting through to folks who use craigslist, but it’s not easy — they’re very persistent. If you’re interested in finding out more about how these scams work, Wikipedia has some pretty good descriptions of the various types:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advance_fee_fraud

And more information is available on craigslist’s “scams & fraud” page:

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/about/scams.html

Summary

Why can’t people just be honest? This stinks, that I suspect every response that I get is from a scammer.

What do you think – would you deal with them?

Stock images of City Skylines in Salt Lake City, Utah, Phoenix, Arizona, and Raleigh North Carolina. Different viewpoints, time of day, lighting weather patterns, etc. Let me know what you think and how you use the images in your creative process.

I have a series of images that are quite popular on my iStockphoto.com portfolio. They are a series of city skylines shot when I traveled to various destinations for business.

It would seem so simple to shoot a skyline image, but I have found that it is not as simple as it looks. It takes time, planning, research, and the weather has to cooperate as well.

Phoenix, Arizona Skyline Stock Image

Say for example, the skyline stock image that I took of Phoenix, Arizona. I don’t know if you have been to Phoenix, but it is FLAT. There is a small hill (I think the local’s call it a mountain) off in the NW of the city, but other than that, the tallest thing around are the freeway overpasses. So getting a good skyline image is not easy to do. I drove around for a couple of hours looking for the perfect location. I shot a couple from around the airport overlooking the downtown that didn’t turn out exactly the way I wanted. The light was wrong. I was shooting in the magic light hours, but I was shooting northwest, not exactly towards the sun, but enough where it was ruining my shot.

So I got in my car and drove around again. The light was fading fast. If you have ever been in a situation where you are racing the sun go down, you will relate to how fast the sun actually sets.

I finally found a place that I could shoot and came up with this image. It took a lot of photoshop to take out the powerlines that were running through the image. But I think it is a good representation of what Phoenix looks like. You have the palm trees in the foreground, the skyscrapers in the background and lots of clear, blue sky.

Salt Lake City, Utah Skyline Stock Image

I also have some shots that I took of downtown Salt Lake City, Utah, with the magnificent skyline framed by the Wasatch mountains in the background.

I have shots in the middle of the calm in the middle of the storm, some fabulous night images, and summer shots of downtown Salt Lake City, Utah with no snow in the mountains.

Looking west to east in Salt Lake City, Utah is a beautiful view. The mountains are impressive. The downtown area is consolidated to a fairly small area. The problem is where to shoot. I have driven around Salt Lake City (similar to the time I drove around Phoenix) looking for the perfect place to shoot.

Salt Lake City Skyline at Night Stock Image

I want to capture a good representation of the downtown skyscrapers and the world famous Salt Lake Temple from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with the Wasatch mountains framed in the background. There are a couple of good places right off the freeway, but it is not easy to stop in the emergency lane to frame the shot. I also like to stay for awhile and capture the light as it fades to dusk, so a shot will take me 2-3 hours of shooting, plus the time it takes to find the location to shoot.

Salt Lake City is one of my favorite cities in the United States. The city planners have done a great job and it is a fabulous place to visit! And – it is a fabulous place to shoot!

When I was in Raleigh, North Carolina, I had some time between meetings that I decided to find a place to shoot a skyline shot. I had two time slots, one in the middle of the day, one in the late afternoon during the golden light of the day. I decided to shoot both shots to give designers the ability to choose between mid-day blue sky lighting versus the late afternoon more warm lighting reflecting off of the skyscrapers. Both of the Raleigh, North Carolina City Skyline stock images are available in my iStockphoto portfolio, although the mid-day blue sky image is selling better than the late afternoon image.

Another downtown skyline image of Boise, Idaho. This image took forever to photoshop! There were so many telephone lines in the foreground of the picture. It took hours to get them all out…
